The Peace that Passeth All Understanding

The world today is full of turmoil and strife. In the news all we see is murders, wars, thefts, and natural disasters. There is a cry for peace throughout the world. Peace between Israel and Palestine, peace between the Arab world and the west, peace in America’s streets. The cry is continually peace, peace but there is no peace. But according to the Bible this is the way of the world. Jeremiah 8:11 “For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” (KJV) You see, sin was as prevalent in Jeremiah’s day as it is today. The previous verses in the above text talk about how the whole land of Israel was given to abominations and verse 11 is talking about how the leaders were trying to comfort the people by say peace, peace, but there was no peace. This is the sad state of the whole world. Our country, which was founded on Biblical principles, is now full of abominations. Covetousness, adultery, idolatry, homosexuality, and the cursing of God are prevalent today. All of these things God says is an abomination to Him, in other words, it makes Him sick! Thankfully God’s Word does not stop at naming the bad things but He actually tells us how we CAN have peace – true peace!

The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Wow! A peace that passes all understanding?! How would one get this peace? The Bible is very clear on how to obtain this peace. “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” (Romans 5:1) You see, the greatest peace one can ever obtain is peace with God. The peace of this world can come and go but peace with God is something that will last through eternity! Some may say that that is a bunch of religious mumbo jumbo but I experience this peace ever day of my life. Probably one of the greatest times this peace had filled my life was in August 2006. At that time I was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. My unit and I were on our way to Iraq and many had worries filling their life. Thoughts of death were at the forefront. As we were about to leave and I was saying goodbye to my wife and kids it was a time of sadness because I knew it would be a long time before I saw them again. Because my wife and I had accepted the Lord as our Saviour we had the promise of seeing each other again in Heaven if I were to be killed. I was able to leave my family for 15 months and have peace in my life because God’s promises to His children have always held true. I also knew God would take care of my family according to Jeremiah 49:11.

So, how do you obtain this peace? Romans 5:1 tells us it was in being “justified by faith”. How does one accomplish this? Is it good works, church membership, baptism? How does one become justified and have peace? Jesus said in John 3:7 “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” Justification and peace come by being born again through Jesus Christ. So now I must ask: Have you ever been born again? Next week I will tell you about this new birth and how to obtain it.

I know that peace! When I was in OEF and OIF. I had peace knowing that GOD loves my wife and family more than I am able to! GOD loves me more than they are able to! Psalms 91 was read daily.
